Tim Walker’s Inspiration found in Vogue UK May 09

Helena Christensen, By Peter Lindbergh, 1990
“I was 19 when I first saw this photograph. Having just been released from five dark years at a Victorian boarding school, I fled south to the bright and jolly promise of Australia. I ended up helping out Nelly and Jane, fashion editors at Australian Harper’s Bazaar. Weekends were spent at Jane’s bright-green apartment overlooking Bondi Bay, listening to the Betty Blue soundtrack and looking through piles of magazines. British Vogue, with it’s heroic fashion pictures by Herb Ritts: American Vogue, with its pictures of actresses and Olympic swimmers by Bruce Weber; and Italian Vogue with it’s black-and-white stories by Peter Lindbergh, that you see here. ‘Aren’t they the best?’ Jane would say, holding the magazine to her heart. ‘The Best!’ agreed Nelly. ‘Look at them, Tim!’ they’d shout. I did look at them, again and again. The fashion world I was experiencing then was the outdoorsy, unpretentious warmth of early-Nineties Sydney, mixed with a 6ft-high silent heroine called Helena Christensen, dancing over the dry desert of my dreams with a 3ft midget from Mars.”
